A Journey Through Art, History and Philosophy: Raku Ceramics

Japan, 16th century. Raku, a ceramic working technique aimed at enhancing the harmony of small things, the beauty in simplicity, the naturalness of forms, was born.

In traditional Japanese culture, the tea ceremony represents the highest expression of the Wabi-Sabi aesthetic philosophy in which two opposites, the pursuit of perfection and man’s own imperfection, find the balance symbolizing the impermanence of life.

This thought becomes matter in the tea cups, and Raku ceramics the medium by which to express the ideal of imperfect and transient beauty proper to Wabi-Sabi through the simple and austere appearance of these objects, which are strictly handmade.

Like fragrant spices, Raku ceramics have come to us by traveling on the millennia-old routes of the Silk Road from the farthest reaches of the East. Just as with the former, Raku ceramics eventually met the refined taste of Italian artists who creatively enhanced its techniques. An encounter resulting from ingenious contaminations of knowledge, arts and cultures; a fertile heritage of humanity whose sublime material and spiritual essence can only be grasped by the chosen spirits.

The Encounter: Raku Pottery and Euthalia Fragrances

The clay pots, molded one by one and decorated with crystalline glazes and natural oxide dyes, are engulfed by the fiery mouth of the firing kiln. The pottery is taken out of the glowing kiln and placed in a container filled with flammable material, which, when in contact with the red-hot clay, ignites, wisping tongues of fire fueled by the oxygen in the air.

It is the genesis of creation; the fruitful collision of the earth with the power of fire and the vital breath of air.

Like the Hephaestus of myth, the Master Craftsman by smothering or fueling the fire that envelops the vessel, enhances or attenuates the saturations of the oxides giving life to nuances, colorimetries and decorative geometries, in continuous, incessant evolution, pressed by the feverish struggle between the primordial elements: earth, air, fire and water.

It is in fact by dipping and cooling the vase in water that the Master fixes its essence forever in auniqueness of form and color that can never be repeated. The creation is accomplished.
